It just came to me recently as I am very active being a virtual assistant at the moment.

I am busier as a virtual assistant rather than being a writer as of now.

I believe every beginning has an end but I would not want to end my freelance writing career.

After all, I started out as a freelance writer.

The only solution I can think of is reducing my freelance writing gigs.

At least I would be able to work on something I love.

In my early days as a freelance writer, I thought that freelance writing would be a life-long career for me.

Now that I am also a virtual assistant, I believe there are many other things we can do for a living.

In fact, it is recommended to try expand our career into other areas.

Personally I would really love to venture into e-commerce but will have to take it slow and steady.

Ok, so you have the skills (at least you think you have) and jump right in to the freelancing industry thinking that you can dominate the industry with your skills.

There are some people who actually believe that they can be freelancers with minimal skills or no special skills at all.

It is proven through my experience that freelancing is not as easy as everyone else thinks.

#1 Competition among freelancers

Competition is normal. In fact, it is what we have to deal with every day. To get the right job, you have to compete with at least a dozen freelancers.

To get the best jobs, there would be hundreds of freelancers heading towards the same direction.

To stay in the industry, you need to have something unique, something that cannot be found in other freelancers. To be unique is the challenge.

With writing skills alone, you can hardly survive the freelance writing industry (if you want to be a freelance writer).

With typing skills alone, you won’t have a career as a virtual assistant.

You need a combination of several skills to get to the top. This is why it is very important to learn something new every day and be sure to stay up-to-date with current freelancing trend.

Some important skills you need to be successful in freelancing:

• copywriting
• article marketing
• blogging – WordPress, Blogger, CSS, HTML, e.t.c.
• designing

#2 Fighting for the best rates

If you have been in the industry long enough, you will know just how many freelancer writers out there who are willing to sell their work for a very, very low price.

Don’t be surprised to come across rates such as $1 / 500 words type of articles.

Usually it is a common problem for new freelancers who venture into Freelancer.com or any other freelancing job sites to bid for jobs. You need to bid a low price in order to get the job.

If you can score a job that pays well from the beginning, it would be a great start but then again, not everyone is lucky enough to land a high paying job in the first week of freelancing.

#3 The risk of getting scammed

We have heard stories about freelancers not getting paid for their work.

This is a risk every freelancers must go through every day.

There are warnings to look out for so be sure to equip yourself with as much information and knowledge on scams to avoid being scammed.

Freelancing is not easy but not impossible.

With so many challenges ahead, you need to be fully prepared in order to be a successful freelancer and earn an income beyond your imagination.

After all, there are so many full time jobs being advertised on the internet and in the classifieds.

For some reason, there are so many people who are unemployed out there so why not take this chance to get into the freelancing industry?

After all, it is better than being unemployed.

It is not extremely easy to start freelancing but you have to start somewhere.

First, you need the right skills. Secondly, you need a computer or a laptop. Then, you need a job market.

Ask yourself:

“What can you do?”

Writing? Designing? Coding?

These are valuable skills in the freelancing world.

If you love to write, you might want to check out some revenue-sharing sites.

Submit your articles and earn royalties on your articles. You can even do this as a part time job.

Otherwise, you can check out freelance writing job sites.

Be sure to rate yourself reasonably. Check out the right rate for your work.

Once you have determined what you want to do, you should promote your service.

While you are doing freelancing, be sure to avoid scams.

So, here I present to you in post #261, five mistakes I have done as a freelance writer.

Mistake #1

I willingly agreed to a project rate without initiating a negotiation for a higher rate. Seriously, I thought that I wasn’t in the position to negotiate for a better rate, but I was wrong. As a new freelance writer, we have every right (not “write”) to get a better rate, if the client is offering a very low rate for our hard work. At least negotiate for a reasonable rate. Do not settle for a rate fit for slave.

Mistake #2

Agreed to add in more work but didn’t raise the rate. Silly me! I didn’t know how I can make such a mistake, but I made a mistake and it was a very costly mistake.

Mistake #3

I didn’t request for a deposit. In the end, I didn’t get a full payment at all. I didn’t get paid for the work I have done. Always request for a deposit, for your own financial security.

Mistake #4

I didn’t know I have the right to say “NO”. Seriously, as a freelancer, I have the right to say “NO” :

• when I don’t want to take any projects
• when the projects are not suitable / not in line with my work
• when the projects are not rewarding and time consuming
• whenever I feel like saying “NO”

You don’t have to say “Yes” all the time.

Mistake #5

Not making a stand about what I do and will not do in a project. I should have stated that my job is to write, not to edit or design anything. When I failed to mention that in a contract or something, I had to do everything way beyond my job description. Be specific about what you do, as you are getting paid to do only what you are told to do in the first place. If your client requires you to add in more work, please refer my Mistake #2.

There are times when you just need to grab any freelance writing jobs you can find because you need extra money or because freelance writing is your career.

That would be a time when you can NEVER say no to low paying freelance writing jobs.

What do you do?

How can you survive with such low paying jobs?

1. When you come across such freelance writing ads, you need to read from the beginning to the end of the description. Look out for how many words, topics related and payment method. This helps you choose the best freelance writing jobs for yourself.

2. Some of the jobs are quite reasonable – RM5 for 100-200 words. Some of the jobs can be bad – RM5 for 500 words. Look for reasonable freelance writing jobs.

3. Try to do as many articles possible, if there is no limit. Sometimes, there might be a limit of 20 articles a week and you need to share the 20 articles with other freelance writers. Grab all 20 articles for yourself if you can handle it. This way at least you will get RM100 for yourself.

4. If you can’t grab all 20 articles for yourself, apply for more freelance writing jobs of similar tasks. You can work for two or three clients at the same time – without the guilt (you are a freelancer).

5. You don’t have to spend 30 minutes to complete an article. You just need 10 minutes – especially for 100 – 200 words. If you can get RM10 an article, then you should spend 30 minutes.

6. Apart from local job ads, perhaps you should expand to international job ads. Instead of earning RM5/article, try $5/article – if you are lucky.

7. If you are stuck at RM5/article for a very, very long time, perhaps you should try different clients or at least ask for a raise – maybe RM8/article, if you are good. If the client is not willing to give you a raise, leave!

8. Always put up an ad on Craigslist to let people know you are LOOKING for a freelance writing job – short/long term.

There are many clients out there. You just need to make the best choice.

I would like to continue to add more reasons and here is a list of 5 reasons why I think freelancing is cool.

1. No more paying for transportation

(I used to take the bus to work and it costs me RM2 every working day, so 22 days x RM2 = RM44 a month)

2. No more spending extra money for lunch

(It costs about RM5 per lunch and I work an average 22 days a month, so 22 days x RM5 = RM110 a month)

3. Get to spend more time watching my favourite drama series – I love Charmed and Chuck

4. Friends envy me – It is not my intention to make them envy me, but they do because I work from home. They wish to be me!

5. Even my mum thinks I am unemployed (at first) and she has no idea how I can give her money to spend – which is pretty cool

Until today, most people around me can’t understand the concept of my work. Sometimes, I am getting tired of having to explain many times about what I do, and how I can earn a living.

Extra reason: My income is unpredictable

I really love the fact that I can save some money as I no longer use public transportation and I don’t eat out as often as I used to, which means I can save about RM154 a month, and that is a big deal for me. An extra RM154 every month means I can pay off my debt faster.

We need money for food, accommodation, transportation and other things in life that stand between our need and desires.

So, we work to earn money, with the hope to change our life around.

Do you work more than 8 hours a day, to make sure that your projects are done on time?

Perhaps you can earn a few more bucks by doing some other jobs, aside from the projects you are working on?

The truth is some people do work 24/7 – with a few hours off to sleep, maybe.

Other than sleeping, everything else is all about work, getting work done and gaining more work, after the previous work is done.

I don’t really work 24 hours, 7 days a week, but I definitely work more than 8 hours.

Sometimes, I find myself going towards the “working 24/7” mode, especially when I have tons of work to be completed.

I don’t seem to be able to take my mind off work, at anytime and anywhere, not even when I am spending time with family and I have no idea why I just can’t leave work where it is supposed to be – in my home office.

However, I do enjoy freelancing even though having to work more than 8 hours, because I get to work at home, using my own laptop and wear whatever I want, without having to worry about wardrobe malfunctions, spending additional money for lunches or paying even more expenses for transportation to and fro the office.

The whole point of me being in the freelancing industry is to avoid working in the office, although I only need to work about 8 hours in the office. Now, I truly enjoy the world of freelancing, even if it means I have to work more than 8 hours a day.
