If you are not familiar with ghost writing, here is an excerpt from Wikipedia,

A ghostwriter is a professional writer who is paid to write books, articles, stories, reports, or other texts that are officially credited to another person.

Some writers despise ghost writing because they won’t get any credit for their work. Someone else will get the credit. This is the biggest turn off in the early days but once you get started and get along with the work, you will find that ghost writing is rather rewarding.

You can be a ghost writer for:

non fiction

fiction

blog

website

lyrics

academic materials

There is one reason why I love being a ghost writer. It is all about the money. It is reported that some high profile ghost writers have been paid millions to write autobiographies of public figures.

There I said it. I love being a ghost writer for the money. Credit is not important to me at all, unless if I am writing something that I intend to publish under my name (or pen name).

If you are considering ghost writing, start small. Get one small task and see if it suits you.

Most freelance writing job sites are offering ghost writing positions. However, be careful when you apply for jobs.

1. Money influence people. When I first started freelance writing, there had been many times when I did not have any work to do = no income = no money to spend (because I was just new in the industry).

So when something happened unexpectedly – maybe something between life and death – I would be panic because I did not have enough money / perhaps no money at all.

That was when I would “almost do anything” for the sake of getting money. Low paying jobs were the only choices I had at that time. Now, my freelance writing business is getting better and I make sure I have some savings.

Used with permission from Debbie Ohi - Will Write For Chocolate

2. New Year Resolution is a waste of time. This is why I do not make any resolutions.

I always failed at following my own resolutions.

Used with permission from Debbie Ohi - Will Write For Chocolate

3. Just because someone rejected your work, that doesn’t mean you are a bad freelance writer. You have to keep trying unless you get a “Yes”. Don’t take “No” for an answer. Remember: everyone else can say “no” to you but you can never say “no” to yourself.

Used with permission from Debbie Ohi - Inkygirl

4. It is important to believe in yourself. You can achieve your dreams when you believe in yourself. I believe myself, therefore I manage to be a freelance writer (my ambition when I was a teenager). My husband didn’t believe me in the first place, which made everything else much more difficult but after some time, he showed his support because I believe in me.

Used with permission from Debbie Ohi - Inkygirl

5. It is best to have a notebook (a real notebook that you can write on using a pen or pencil) all the time. You never know when your next “great” ideas might visit you. When the idea is visiting you, it is best to be prepared. Once you have written your ideas, you can develop it.

Enjoy!

It is already September 2010. In 2 months, NaNoWriMo will hit the world once again. Are you ready for the challenge to write at least 50k words (for a novel)?

I have written about NaNoWriMo a long time ago.

Let me refresh you on what you should do if you want to be part of the NaNoWriMo movement.

1. Register on NaNoWriMo.

2. Check your email.

3. Log in to your account.

4. Read everything on the website – advices, stories and everything else related

5. Start writing on 1st of November.

6. You can write with other participants / write on your own throughout November.

7. Keep on writing until you reach 50k or more.

8. Upload your work on 30th November for official verification.

9. There is no win / lose. There is only satisfaction!

10. Congratulate yourself whether you reach the target or not.

NaNoWriMo is an excellent platform to keep yourself in tune with your writing (especially if you want to write a novel). Get focused on reaching the target and remember to start from scratch. No cheating, ok?

Prepare now, physically and mentally for the challenge.

Everyone (the participants) is a winner on NaNoWriMo.

It has been a long time since I checked my Triond account.

In fact, I think I have almost given up on Triond.

Triond is my first platform to earn passive income, followed by Bukisa.

After long hours of working on different projects, I decided to take a peek at my account and there was a surprise waiting for me.

I have been given 2 badges – something like a recognition. I felt so good seeing these badges, knowing that Triond has improved (moving forward).

Finally, something to motivate me!

The best part of all, I have $1.14 pending, to be paid on 10th September 2010. It is not much, but something I gain from practically doing nothing for Triond in the past six months.

It is time to be active on Triond once again.

Do you want to join Triond?

I am a freelance writer and I write every day.

It can be an article, a blog post or maybe a report but all I do is write.

The problem is writing can be boring (very boring) sometimes.

Why writing can be boring?

It is boring when you have to do it on daily basis

It is boring when you are running out of ideas

It is boring when you have certain rules to follow when writing

It is boring when you know exactly what to write about and yet the words are not flowing

It is boring when you have to write about something you hate

It is boring when you have to hit the books to find something interesting (or maybe research the internet)

It is boring when no one reads your writing

It is extra boring when you have to work late (sometimes)

Now that you know why writing can be boring, don’t be surprised if I am not updating this blog frequent enough.

I have other responsibilities.

Check out some of my past articles on why writing is boring:

Please refer to http://www.websitesforwriters.net/ and you will realise that there are so many writing sites.

Some of them about publishing books, while others are about freelance writing.

I love to blog hop so this is definitely the best site for me to discover all the writing sites available on the internet.

One problem. I don’t have the time to read all of them & they are all so interesting.

Once you are addicted to any ONE of the site, you can never stop reading, and I mean it.

So, the best I can do is to go through some of these sites and read whatever that attracts me FIRST!

p/s: Do vote for Writing Consultation on Websites for Writers.

Writing for NaNoWriMo is not as easy as you ‘think’. You need a lot of ideas and energy to keep on writing. Determination is also very important as you will need to keep on writing for 30 days to complete 50k words (for your novel).

There are a few tips to follow if you are participating NaNoWriMo. Whether this is your first time or second time (or maybe many times), you can still make use of these tips:

50,000 divide by 30 days and you get 1666.67, which means you have to write about 1700 words every day in order to achieve the target of 50k words in 30 days. So make sure you set your target to write 1700 words in a day for 30 days.

Be sure to have a main idea in your mind when you write. You can expand your main idea but it is better to stick to your main idea as you need to get your first draft completed in 30 days. You can start to enhance your imagination weeks before the start of NaNoWriMo so that by the time November is approaching, you know what you can write about.

Don’t get stressed when you are writing. There is no need to rush although it would be best to focus on writing if you are determined to reach the target.

If you can’t write everyday, you can always catch up on weekends. However, since you need to write about 1700 words every day, be sure to calculate how many words you need to catch up with, when you have the time to write [i.e. 1700 x (number of days you have missed writing) = total words to write / catch up with].

Sometimes, you won’t be able to get the sentences in the correct flow. When this happens, you can always write a few words in random and then coin them together whichever way you can.

Keep on writing and never edit your work even though you know you have made mistakes such as error in spellings and grammar. Your goal is to complete 50k words in 30 days, not to write a perfect copy of novel for publishing immediately.

This tip might sounds like a cheat but actually it is not: always spell out numbers or character’s name in full characters. For example: 22 = twenty two, Mr. Y.L. Wong = Mr. Wong Lai Yong, and so on.

Commitment is very important. Without commitment you won’t be able to complete the whole journey at all.

Always be conscious of the number of words you need to write (do this every day before you begin your writing ritual).

If you need more resources, check out NaNoFiMo resources page.

It is time for NaNoWriMo again! (National Novel Writing Month)

Yes, it is November again (2009!).

If you are an aspiring author of a novel, hurry up and sign up so that you can practice your writing skills and complete the task of writing 50k words in 30 days. You don’t have to really finish the novel on time. You just need to write 50k in 30 days and you don’t even have to polish your writing because this would be your very first draft.

Once you have completed the task, you will get to decide whether you want to keep the draft aside until you are ready to polish it and publish it or you can keep it as a souvenir that you have completed NaNoWriMo proudly.

Register now, start writing and keep track of your progress through the site.

Timeline: November 1 – November 30

Are you ready for this challenge?
